Generic Framing Procedure (GFP)
|
GFP arose out of carrier interest in supporting the transport of a diverse array of data services over their deployed network infrastructure. As they looked out into their customers' networks and saw an increasing number of data-link-layer transport technologies present within the enterprise, carriers asked for a standards-based method of adapting the widest possible variety of these data types onto SDH/SONET channels or wavelengths. The result was GFP, which is a universal traffic adaptation protocol for the mapping of all broadband transport, be it Ethernet, IP, Fiber Channel, or other block-coded or packet-oriented data streams, into SDH/SONET.
