802.1q is a standard for
supporting VLANs in a network. VLANs are a popular method of
implementing security and suppressing broadcasts in a Layer 2
environment. The switches forward unicast, multicast, and broadcast
traffic only on LAN segments that serve the VLAN to which the
traffic belongs. VLANs also facilitate easier administration of
logical groups, move, add, and change to the members of these
groups.
IEEE
802.1q virtual bridged lan is a Layer 2 messaging protocol that
manages the addition, deletion, and renaming of VLANs on a
network-wide basis. |
