Ethernet OAM (Operations, Administration & Maintenance)
|
Due to rigorous standardization effort of ITU and IEEE, Ethernet has truly emerged as the only packet transport technology that has fully standardized, comprehensive and complete Fault and Performance OAM. ITU and IEEE have coordinated to develop fully consistent, non-contradictory, complementary and comprehensive OAM standards. These efforts are currently being led by "Ethernet in First Mile - OAM" (EFM-OAM: IEEE 802.3 ah), "Connectivity Fault Management" (CFM: IEEE 802.1 ag) and "EthOAM" (ITU-T Y.1731).
While EFM-OAM concerns the access-link, CFM and EthOAM concern the monitoring of an Ethernet flow end-to-end. The ability to manage Ethernet flows end-to-end would further the adoption of Ethernet in carrier-networks. EthOAM also allows a Service Provider to monitor the performance of the Ethernet flows in terms of Frame Delay, Frame Delay Variation, and Frame Loss. These parameters essentially allow a Service Provider to monitor the SLAs (Service Level Agreements) provided to the customers, thereby ensuring customer confidence in Ethernet Services.
