Dr Kumar N. Sivarajan receives the IIT Madras Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2013

April 09, 2013, Chennai: Dr Kumar N. Sivarajan, CTO, Tejas Networks received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2013 from IIT Madras. The Distinguished Alumnus awards are presented annually by IIT Madras and the past recipients of the award include Dr Gururaj Deshpande, serial-entrepreneur and chairman of Tejas networks.

Kumar is the Chief Technology Officer of Tejas Networks since its inception in the year 2000. He has led the company to develop cutting edge technologies in optical and carrier Ethernet space. Under Kumar’s technical leadership, Tejas has developed products that power some of the global tier 1 telecom networks and are deployed in over 60 countries. Tejas is also among the top patent filers in India.

Prior to Tejas, Kumar was an Associate Professor in the Electrical Communication Engineering Department, at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Prior to IISc he worked with the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York.

Kumar is co-author of the textbook `Optical Networks: A Practical Perspective’ published in February 1998. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, an Associate of the Indian Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Swarnajayanti Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology, and the 2004 Global Indus Technovator Award from the India Business Club at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also a recipient of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc Fortescue Fellowship and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.BakerPrizePaper Award.

Kumar did his Bachelor’s Degree in Technology in Electrical Engineering from the Indian IIT, Madras in the year 1987 and a Doctorate from the California Institute of Technology.
